Constantine Dohogne
Private Constant Dohagne Company D, 4th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Cavalry (U.S.) was born Constantine Dohagne July 29, 1842 in Francorcamp, France- near Ster, Belgium. He emigrated to America with his parents in 1854. His parents were John Joseph and Mary Ann (Dechamp) Dohogne. Constant joined the Union Army on January 1, 1862, enlisting in Company D of the 4th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. He was honorably discharged at Memphis, Tennessee January 7, 1865. He was 5-feet-7.5-inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes. This regiment was attached to several Divisions throughout the war. Constant (Company C) fought in the following: Curtis' Campaign in Missouri and Arkansas January to April, 1862; Sugar Creek, Ark., February 17; Bentonville February 19; Occupation of Fayetteville February 23; Battles of Pea Ridge, Ark., March 6-8. At the War's end this unit moved to Alexandria, thence to Shreveport, La. thence moved to Texas July 10-August 2 for garrison duty at San Antonio and scouting along the Rio Grande, Texas, till November, 1865. Mustered out November 13, 1865. The Regiment lost during service 4 Officers and 56 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 6 Officers and 177 Enlisted men by disease. Total 243. After the war, Constant returned to his farming and banking business- the Farmers and Merchants Bank-, which he helped organize - in Kelso, Missouri. He married Rosina Heisserer on September 3, 1867 at St.Vincent Catholic Church, Cape Girardeau, Missouri They had twelve children-nine of whom grew to maturity. They were Katie, who died at age 4, Anna Rose( Robert), Louisa who died in infancy only 2 weeks old, Frank, Mary (Enderle), Willie,who died in infancy only 2 weeks old, Amanda, never married, Emil Edward, Alvina ( Seyer), Pauline (Seyer), and Benjamin. They lived in the Little Drainage Basin near New Hamburg but later moved to Kelso, Missouri . Constant died April 8, 1927. His wife died April 30, 1936. Both are buried at St.Augustine Catholic Church Cemetery in Kelso, Missouri. Rosina's Heisserer's father and brother-Antoine and John, respectively- were memorialized on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island that was erected in 1992. He lives in Bryant, AR with his wife, Sherri Lynn, and youngest son, Daniel. His oldest son, Jason, is graduated and teaches at a highschool in St. Louis.
