"Longstreet: Lee”s Old Warhorse
by Drew Hodges, North Pulaski
CWRT
James "Pete" Longstreet served in Florida, in the Mexican War
(1 wound, 2 brevets), in garrison, and on the frontier against the Indians
before resigning June 1, 1861. He was appointed Brig. General in
the C.S.A. on June 17, 1861.
Was he brave? Was he aggressive? Was he lacking in the knowledge
of warfare? Was he dilatory? Or was he just a good soldier
who erred?
Most of all why did Lee turn to him again and again? Come
listen to Drew Hodges as he tells us about another Confederate General
who is revered by some and maligned by others.
THANKS TO Dr. Dan Sutherland of the Uni-versity of Arkansas, Fayetteville,
for his excellent presentation last month, Guerilla Warfare. Dan”s
informative talk addressed the subject he calls ?the desperate side
of war.

PAST PRESIDENT DON HAMILTON picked up litter, cut, clipped and mulched
the CWRT L.R. battle monument area at the intersection of E.Roosevelt and
Fourche Dam Pike before the SCV Motorcyle Fund Raiser event, which made
stops at all the sites on the Little Rock Campaign Trail. He also
painted the iron fence which member George Davis made and installed on
both sides of the monument in connection with the Rotary project.
Thanks, Don! (He”s also past chairman of the Central Arkansas Civil
War Heritage Trail, and a recipient of the RT's Pat Cleburne Award.)
Ted Birndorf (L), president of The Civil War Round Table, in Chicago,
presents the group's Allan Nevins-Douglas Southall Freeman award to Jerry
L. Russell (R) of Little Rock at its October 10 meeting in Chicago.
The Civil War Round Table was the first Round Table to be organized--in
December 1940--and it inaugurated the award in 1986, to pay tribute to
persons who have made significant contributions to Civil War History.
Bruce Catton was the first honoree.
SEE YOU TUESDAY NIGHT for Drew Hodges on Longstreet.
We Who Study Must Also Strive To Save!
